Job Capsule

In accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project or task. Will normally plan, conduct and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving larger, more critical projects or multiple projects.  These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination.

Job Duties/Roles

  1. Maintains active awareness of technical, business and management developments affecting present and potential customers and communicates this information promptly to the appropriate senior level managers.
  2. Serves as Account Manager to designated and potential customers and actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the business community.
  3. Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned.  Assigns projects to Engineers/Senior Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects.  Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.
  4. Develops suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Advises assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  5. Directs the implementation and operation of the ABS Quality System with regard to technical work in assigned jurisdiction.
  6. Performs selected engineering reviews and analyses where necessary.
  7. Advises managers of short- and long-term manpower needs in order to insure that qualified, trained technical staff are available as needs arise and identifies associated training needs.
  8. Appraises the performance and development potential of subordinates.
  9. Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals and bids; makes presentation of these materials to prospective clients when necessary.
  10. Ensures accurate billing to clients in a timely manner.
  11. Ensures that all ABS Quality System requirements with regard to technical work within assigned technical area of responsibility are fulfilled.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (KSAR)

  1. Expert on multiple tools, technical platforms, techniques, etc.
  2. Extensive previous experience in the aforementioned tasks.
  3. Understanding of the methodology of program development.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Knowledge of relational and hierarchical database management systems.
  6. Qualified in the design and maintenance of computer systems.
  7. Skilled in developing computer solutions for one of the following:  Engineering; HRIS; Financial; CAD.
  8. Data analysis and modeling.
  9. Proven ability to instruct others.
  10. Demonstratedability to work well with others.
  11. Needs to be familiar with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Minimum years of Experience

The following are new hire requirements for university graduates and experienced engineers from industry:

I.       Graduate from University (A or B, and C) and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.

A.     For those with Hull backgrounds

  1. B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
  2. Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
  3. Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research)

B.    For those with Machinery backgrounds

  1. B.S. degree in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred

C.    For those with either Hull or Machinery background

  1. Preference for graduates from a marine-industry recognized college or university
  2. Good command of English language

II.     Experienced Engineer from Industry (A or B)

A.    Hull

  1. Professional or chartered engineer license
  2. Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years an ABS Senior Engineer II.

B.    Machinery

  1. Minimum 15 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or a minimum of three (3) years an ABS Senior Engineer II. 
  2. Seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license

Required/Preferred Education Requirements

B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, NavalArchitecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering orother related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
