Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to support a funded research project evaluating the allergenicity and molecular characteristics of proteins produced via precision fermentation. The role involves experimental work across two research sites (NUS PPC and SFA) under site-specific supervision, with a strong emphasis on protein chemistry, mass spectrometry–based proteomics, and data analysis.
The appointee will independently conduct laboratory experiments and analyses, contribute to literature review and scientific reporting, and support routine laboratory operations. The position requires hands-on experience in protein extraction, purification, proteomics sample preparation, and downstream bioinformatics analysis, as well as familiarity with food safety, novel foods, and protein authenticity assessment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform protein extraction, purification, and characterisation from biological and food-related matrices
- Prepare samples for proteomics analysis, including in-gel and in-solution tryptic digestion
- Conduct gel electrophoresis, protein assays, and routine buffer preparation
- Apply LC–MS/MS–based proteomics to identify proteins and detect covalent or post-translational modifications
- Perform proteomics and genomics data analysis, including mass spectrometry–based bioinformatics workflows
- Conduct independent literature reviews related to allergenicity, precision fermentation, novel foods, and food safety
- Support data interpretation in the context of food safety and regulatory science
- Work independently while adhering to SOPs and supervisor instructions at both host sites
- Contribute to general laboratory housekeeping, inventory tracking, and research support activities
- Assist with documentation, reporting, and presentation of research findings
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Forensic Science, Molecular Biology, Food Science, Biotechnology, or related field)
- Formal training in molecular genetics and protein-based techniques
- Hands-on laboratory experience in:Protein extraction and electrophoresisProteomics sample preparation (in-gel / in-solution digestion)
- Demonstrated experience with mass spectrometry data analysis and bioinformatics
- Working knowledge of Python or equivalent scripting language for data analysis
- Ability to work independently, manage experiments across multiple sites, and follow SOPs rigorously
- Research experience involving proteogenomics, food safety, or food regulation related areas
- Experience supporting laboratory operations, including inventory management and purchasing
- Strong organisational skills and ability to contribute to administrative and research coordination tasks
